Art, Future, and Friendship – Youth Devotional, June 2015

Posted on Updated on

Another day of Youth Devotional with fun, games, and spirituality. This week, after our songs and games, we had our youth draw out what the word “future” means to them. They were to use only red and black paint. At the end of their drawing, they were to explain the meaning of their art.

In the bible lesson, Calvin, our youth leader, described that the two colours characterised relationship and friendship. As for the word “future”, it was to teach a point about the type of friendships that we form today; our friendships will strongly affect our future, whether good or bad.

  • Proverbs 12:26 One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
  • Proverbs 13:20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
  • Proverbs 17:17 A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.
  • Proverbs 18:24 There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.

“Toss Higher – Grow Higher” Ipoh Church Lo Hei or Lo Sang Lunch

Posted on Updated on

Chinese New Year is coming. So our church had a pre-chinese new year lunch following a chinese tradition of YuSheng or Lo Sang (meaning below). So we tossed to the healthy growth of the church and all the members in 2015.

.

Yusheng, yee sang or yuu sahng (Chinese: 鱼生; pinyin: yúshēng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: hî-seⁿ or hû-siⁿ), or Prosperity Toss, also known as lo hei (Cantonese for 撈起 or 捞起) is a Teochew-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish (most commonly salmon), mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients. Yusheng literally means “raw fish” but since “fish (鱼)” is commonly conflated with its homophone “abundance (余)”, Yúshēng (鱼生) is interpreted as a homophone for Yúshēng (余升) meaning an increase in abundance. Therefore, yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. (from wikipedia)

At the end, we also learned a spiritual lesson about our own race just as what Paul says in 1 Cor 9:24-25 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.…

Alphabet Game (July 2014 Campus and Youth Fellowship)

Posted on

Our Saturday Campus and Youth Fellowship was so blessed to have some visiting brothers and sisters from the Singapore and Kuala Lumpur Church. They made the environment so fun, spiritual, enjoyable, and warm. The Singapore sisters planned a game for our youth called the “Alphabet Game.” It was so fun seeing the brothers and sisters twisted and turned to form the words:

The rules of the game are:
Each group is given the 26 alphabets in sticker form. They are to stick each alphabet randomly in their palms or the sole of their feet. A word is called out, e.g. L.O.V.E. The members of the group with these alphabets are then to form the word holding up their palms and sole of their feet. The word have to be formed in sequence regardless of how many relevant alphabets a member has. Those member without the alphabet of the word should step aside.

This game is best played by 5 or more players per group.

For additional fun: At the end of the game, there is a forfeit for the losing team. In this case, the losing team has to pretend to sound and walk like an animal of their choosing around the room.
